Water is a basic necessity for life. It is a very important component of the human system as it helps in the correct functioning of a human being. Every human being has the right to good water. Water as we know has so many uses: for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and is also a remedy to some stomach related health issues. Despite all the above mentioned properties, some communities have problems with getting clean and pure drinking water in some parts of Cameroon.
Pure water is practically colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Dirty or contaminated water is very dangerous to the health and causes so many waterborne diseases like many types of diarrhea diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease, Typhoid, and Dysentery. Water related diseases are reported to have caused about 3.4 million deaths each year.
Project Analysis Bridgers association Cameroon has seen the need to carry out this project in order to reduce the rate of deaths and people suffering from waterborne diseases, in order to meet up with the sustainable development goal number 6 which is clean water and sanitation. Some communities also face the problem of lack of drinking water. So in this project also, we shall look at means to provide portable water in those communities. We shall be sensitizing the population on three simple methods which are boiling, using a filter and chlorine drops.
Using a water filter Water filters can remove bacteria in water. They contain carbon which gets rid of the chemicals and awful tastes while iodine coated screens can further remove viruses. Treated water can be consumed after the treatment and the water has no bad taste. This is a very good purification but it is expensive and many people cannot afford it. So in this project, Bridgers association team shall be using a BioSand filter. A bioSand filter (BSF) is a point-of-use water treatment system adapted from traditional slow sand filters. BioSand filters remove pathogens and suspended solids from water using biological and physical processes that take place in a sand column covered with a biofilm. BSFs have been shown to remove heavy metals, turbidity, bacteria, viruses and protozoa. BSFs also reduce discoloration, odor and unpleasant taste. Because of their effectiveness, ease of use, and lack of recurring costs, bioSand filters are often considered appropriate technology in developing countries. This filter will really help in communities facing problems of contaminated water as one filter can serve many households.
Boiling This is a very reliable, cheap and easy way to purify water as it doesn’t even the use of any chemicals or additives. This method is highly recommended as it is very effective and cheap. Boiling water kills all germs and bacteria and makes it pure and clean. We advise households to carry out this practice to improve on the quality of their drinking water. Put some water in a pot, once it boils leave for a few minutes to cool. The result will be pure and adequate for drinking.
Use chlorine drops Chlorine has the ability to kill bacteria in water. You can add 3 to 4 drops of chlorine in to a 20 litres gallon of water. After the two have been mixed, let the chlorinated water sit for half an hour before drinking. The purified water should slightly smell of chlorine. If it does not, the process may be repeated. It is important to note that this could be poisonous if you use too many drops so caution is necessary. There are so many other methods of water purification but Bridgers Association will like to focus on the above mentioned three as they are easy, effective, affordable and less technical.
Problem Statement High number of people drinking contaminated water and provide portable water in communities that are not privileged to have.
Project Objectives This project has as main objectives: Reduce the rate at which people drink contaminated water. Provide portable water to communities.
Specific objectives: Sensitization of the population on the methods of water purification. Training them by practice the methods of purification. Buy bioSand filters which can serve many households at once.
Enable quality water to be provided in the communities with contaminated water.
Project benefits The communities will have access to portable drinking water. Reduced number of water related disease cases. Reduced deaths as a result of these diseases.
Project implementation This project shall be implemented in the local communities that face the problem of contaminated water. We shall start with the sensitization of the people on the purification methods we shall be using in this project in those remote areas that have no good source of drinking water. We shall put in place the bioSand water filters to serve many households at a time. Thereby providing on a large scale, good and pure drinking water to the community.
Sustainability To ensure continuity of this project, we shall put in the quarter heads of the various quarters in charge of looking after the filters and reporting back to the Bridgers team. We shall go back for maintenance twice every month.
