Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international
day in honor of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18th July, Mandela’s birth day.
The day was officially declared by the United nations in November
2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18th July 2010. However, other groups began celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July 2009. Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Mandela Day is not meant as a public holiday, but as a day to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former President, and his values, through volunteering and community service.
On 18th July every year, we invite you to mark Nelson Mandela International Day by making a difference in your communities. Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better!
Mandela Day is an occasion for
all to take action and inspire change in the world.
How We Engaged in 2019
In commemoration of this day, Bridgers Association Team joined the Diplomats and YALI Mandela Fellows in carrying out a clean up campaign which involved the cleaning of the maternity and pediatrics wards of the Central Hospital in Yaounde, Cameroon. We cleaned the windows, baby’s cots, and the surroundings of the hospital. We volunteered in our own little way as part of our community service marking the celebration of the Nelson Mandela day 2019.
